Our bikes, part nine

23926220302_006699bc18_k.jpg

This is – in more ways than one – the most modern bike in our stable, a 1988 (egads! the future is here!) Bianchi Trofeo with a – wait for it – gruppo Campagnolo Veloce 10 velocità. Coming from downtube friction shifters, the brake-lever shifting on the modern “Campag” drivetrain is a revelation. The most obvious analogy would be going from a standard (manual) to flappy paddle gearbox in the automotive world, except even that comparison seems facile and imprecise, since manual automotive gearboxes don’t require such procedures as “trimming” shifts (edit: okay, depending on the presence or absence of synchros as well as the condition thereof, equally archaic practices such as double-declutching might be called for). We’re not saying we wouldn’t ever go back to downtube shifters – the satisfying mechanical ‘clunk’ of a C Record shifter has lodged its place firmly within our hearts – but we have also seen the future, and the future looks good.

And of course, we’ve always been big fans of the X4 Argentin-inspired black-and-Celeste contrasting paint scheme, so there’s that going for the bike as well.

Not a great value proposition or even ad – the copy is hilariously hyperbolic – but we thought the sight of a Mavic crankset on a Cinelli Supercorsa was too unusual not to share. Us? We’d remove it immediately and stick it onto a top-flight period French frame, where it belongs. 1980s Supercorsas are for Super and C Record.

PS: we had to Google where “Nanaimo” is (answer: British Columbia).

00E0E_3vWbUgzmQQ9_600x450

Custom Classic Cinelli Supercorsa – $4350 (North Nanaimo)

If you are into roadies, this is worth reading even though you are not buying. Yes, there is at least one rare ferrari rosso Cinelli Supercorsa in Nanaimo and it is up for grab. However, this is not just any Cinelli Supercorsa. This is a collector custom classic which can only increase in value.

I used to restore and custom build bicycle as a hobby and this one is the pinnacle of what I have left in my collection. I took three years in order to gather each and every bearing and spoke for this bicycle and no details had been spared in order to make this neo classic a fantastic bike to ride.

The frameset is a 2006 Cinelli Supercorsa 54cm built with Columbus Neuron tubings and pinned up with a late Campagnolo Record headset. The handlebar is a Vintage Cinelli Giro D’Italia attached to a matching Cinelli 110mm stem of the same period.

The bicycle has the rare first generation C Record rear dee – with the chrome covered lower jockey wheel – and matching C Record front dee and shifters and the unique later generation C Record delta brakes with matching brake levers. The beautiful and rare 1985 Mavic Starfish crankset shares the same “bomber’ look as the rear dee and brake set and enhance the retro look of the bike.

The white seat is a classic Rolls standing on a Dia Compe seatpost and its color matches the white bar tape, brake lever covers and cable tubings. The wheels are custom made of early 80s Campagnolo Super Record hubs with rare vintage 36 spoke super lightweight NOS Fiamme tubular rims.

This is a ten speed bicycle with a max speed of 50km per hour on flats. It is a 20-20 (20-pounder at 20mph) for Sunday rides with the club or century rides. I still own about eight bikes today so this one rarely saw the sun and never saw the rain. You will need to wipe out some dust, change the tubulars, maybe tune a few spokes? Nothing a true collector cannot do on his or her own. It has two chips in the paint and they are both pictured.

Useless to say that the pictures are far from the real thing. Even though these bicycles usually spend more time hanging than riding, this one may bring your man cave to new standards regarding style and conversations. On the road, this pedal hot rod is a true head-turner. The attention it draws from the traffic makes it safe to ride. Everybody will talk to you about it. You will get free drinks at the coffee shop. You will become very popular. Do not come back and say I did not warn you.

Peugeot PY10FC in Los Angeles

00z0z_3DIFbFumwRw_600x450

Peugeot Py10FC carbon fiber frame and fork 57 cm – $250 (Lakewood)

For sale is a Peugeot PY10FC frame and
fork in size 57. Super light weight, this was the lightest frame in the pro peloton in the early to mid 80s. Not to be confused with the Vitus Carbone frames, these were built better, with bigger tubes, so they aren’t as flexy as those. Sprinter Sean Kelly rode one of these to a green jersey victory in the Tour de France.

The frame has no dings, crack or dents in the tubes, but it has been ridden by me, so it is not in showroom condition. The only defect in the frame is that the rear brake cable guide nearest to the seatpost is missing its top. This happened in storage, and I was bummed to see that when I took the frame down for photos; other than that it is fully intact.

The reason for selling is that I just don’t ride this anymore, and am making room in the garage. I am the second owner; the first owner was a bike shop owner in upstate NY who got the frame for his personal use as a favor from Peugeot, since he was a Peugeot dealer. He sold it to me back in 2008 or so, and I rode it for several years before handing it up a year or two ago.

It is a great riding frame, and would be good for someone to ride, or restore as it has a lot of history behind it. Asking $250 OBO, or would trade for a frame in the 55-57cm size range, or nice bike componentry.

RARE EDDY MERCKX ARCOBALENO ROAD BIKE CAMPAGNOLO – $900 (Fremont)

This is a solid bike that is in nice usable condition.
Has been cleaned and tuned including a new chain.
This is a fine steel frame bike with Campagnolo Centaur
indexed shifting with a double in front and nine speeds in rear.
It appears that the component group is Centaur.
The frame size is 57CM with a 32.5″ stand over height and a 57cm top tube.
This would best fit a rider 5’10” to 6’1″.

IMG_3965 copy

We feel extraordinarily privileged and delighted to present to you the iconic Cinelli Laser in “America” specification with Columbus AIR aerodynamic tubing (noting that various tube sets were used during the Laser’s production run, including SLX and MAX). Ours is serial number 075.

IMG_4009 copy

It isn’t perfect – it was ridden and enjoyed in its lifetime and has a light patina (or beausage if you prefer) to show for it – but so much the better: we think it’s an excellent light restoration candidate and/or Sunday rider (yes, really) without the burden that accompanies, say, a museum-quality example that was never put on the road.

IMG_3996 copy

And ridden it we have—glancing down (briefly!) while at speed and catching a glimpse of that pancake-flat down tube is a thrill that doesn’t go away, and the first-generation Campagnolo C Record gruppo is even quieter and silkier than the one on our Supercorsa. To contemplate the bike on a wall and lose oneself in its curves is to be filled with a serene, almost meditative joy; to wind it up, uncork it, and sprint out of its saddle on the open road is to experience pure exhilaration.

IMG_3993 copy

Specification:

  • 1985 Cinelli Laser America, serial number 075
  • Strada, i.e., road specification (as opposed to Pista, Crono)
  • Columbus AIR tubing
  • Original paint
  • Cinelli buffalo leather saddle and matching stitched handlebar wrap
  • 50cm seat tube c-c, 53cm top tube c-c, 78cm standover
  • Campagnolo C Record first generation group set (minus chain and 7-speed freewheel)
  • Campagnolo Record Aero shift levers (we think)
  • Mavic MA2 clincher rims
  • Vittoria Open Corsa SC II 700×23 tires

And now for the moment of truth: the bike is available for purchase. Serious parties, please contact us if you would like to discuss this opportunity further. It may go on eBay (which we would prefer to avoid) if we are unable to find a buyer through this website, although we are in no hurry to sell and will wait for the right buyer irrespective of the channel. Interesting partial trades (i.e., bike + cash) may also be considered. Thank you!

Not sure how we feel about this.

It’s an interesting and unusual bike, to say the least.

(Note that the auction is for the frameset only.)

A chance to purchase a rare ‘DuPont’ paint scheme Rossin Professional in Columbus Max tubing!
I purchased it unridden but it had been built up at some point, so it does have some lightly chipped paint on the dropouts, front derailleur lug, one on the head tube and one underneath the chain stay.
There’s some minor shop wear as well but any marks are out of sight or quickly forgotten once built up.
I had it built with a modern/vintage mix of parts but it hasn’t been ridden enough so it’s time for someone else to enjoy it and actually ride it! (Preferably with it’s period correct Campagnolo C-Record group!)

Although there is no real consistency to Rossin frame serial number or engravings. This frame has “K S” and a number that can’t quite be read on the exposed rear left dropout. And the matching fork also has “K S” and “1” written on the fork steerer.

This frame has it all, tapered lugged MAX tubing, ‘fastback’ stays, Rossin ‘R’ fork engravings, stunning paint work!

Size on the bottom bracket is 54
53cm Top Tube (centre to centre)
53cm Seat Tube (centre to centre)
Columbus MAX tubing
‘Fastback’ seat stays
Rare ‘Du Pont’ paint

For reference I’m 171cm tall, and this was a perfect fit.

Pretty sweet—panto’d chain ring, wow! If we weren’t already up to our ears in bambino road bikes, we’d be jonesing for this pretty hard (although it’s worth noting that the wheel size here is actually 650c (571mm) and not 24×1 (520mm), which technically makes this just a (very) small road bike, not a youth or juvenile model).
